Can I use an iPhone with my current plan instead of buying an iPhone specific plan?

My current plan has family shared minutes, but unlimited texting and internet use. I am planning on buying an iPhone 3GS from a friend, would it work just fine with my current plan or do I have to have an iPhone specific plan?

It doesnt matter what plan are you on, you can still use your iphone, the only thing is, the Iphone should support your sim card.. am sure it would… Have a great time with your Iphone, ENjoy…

I plan to unlock the iPhone 4G and use it since my phone company doesn’t support it. The thing is I don’t have an internet option with my current plan. Can I still download apps on the iPhone without having the internet?
Also, what are the drawbacks or limitations from unlocking iPhone instead of using it with regular service?
