This is going to be a challenge, because sales figures on top iPhone applications, believe it or not, is open for interpretation.

You also want to make sure you are framing your question in the best way. For example:

– Are you looking for iPhone applications that are selling the best, or that are being downloaded the most?
– Are you comparing iPhone application penetration to growth in application spread?
-Do you want the name of the best sellers, or know the price point of the applications that are selling the most?

To get really great information all in one place, you normally have to pay for it from a Gartners or Forrestor. For doing this research in the cheap you can go to a number of resources. And even then, you may have a hard time finding the “Best Selling Application”.

This is the type of data I pulled when I did a marketing analysis of iPhone applications and smartphone distribution.

* 5% of applications had more than 100,000 active users(1) in the AdMob Network in May 2009.
* 14% of applications had between 10,000 – 100,000 active users, representing 322 applications. An application could fall into this low usage category, the apps could be brand new, very old, targeted to a niche market, or not provide a good user experience.

It is also important to keep in mind, that even after you obtain the data, further analysis will be required. For example, apps that are free are downloaded more than those that cost money. Some apps are free for a time period, and then start charging to build up popularity and bolster distribution numbers.
