Space Invaders for iPhone Review

Space Invaders for iPhone Review

Space Invaders is over 30 years old now if you can believe it, and still ranks as the number one arcade game of all-time, and likely will for all-time, unless arcades make a miraculous comeback around the globe.

Space Invaders for iPhone resembles the classic game a lot. This is a plus point as far as retro gamers are concerned. Other games of this genre like Pac-Man and Tetris have undergone upgrades to make it suitable for mobile gaming. However, Space Invaders has not deviated from its original mode. As a gamer, you have no option to save the game. This means you can progress far in the game only if you ready to drop everything else. The level of difficulty is quite tough and the controls need some tweaking and improvement.

Space Invaders is a 2-D shooter, with you controlling a little laser at the bottom of the screen. In the middle of the screen rest hordes of aliens who slowly descend upon you. As more and more of the critters are blasted into pixelly smithereens, the remaining aliens pick up their speed, moving across the screen with increased urgency. The sound also increases in intensity, getting the heart rate pumping as things proceed into overdrive. The aliens will also fire off occasional blasts of fire at you, though you have handy bunkers to hide behind for protection. These bunkers will gradually be destroyed by the aliens though, after which you’re on your own.

After completion of one level, you enter the subsequent level which is a bit more difficult than the preceding one. The real indicator of your success or failure in Space Invaders, like most of the early arcade games, is your score. This game can be, at least in theory, played indefinitely. The absence of an online leaderboard to boast about your gaming skills is a drawback. What is the fun in scoring a lot if you cannot spread the word amongst others? Space Invaders is extremely challenging but can quickly become monotonous.

It must be noted that there is one area where Space Invaders has not changed even one bit. The graphics and sounds department is practically the same that was used in the arcade versions. Except for the option of colorful aliens to blast and upgraded backgrounds, everything else remains the same. If you are hoping to scare your girlfriend with the aliens, you are in for a disappointment. The aliens look like crabs and bats and are not even remotely scary. If you have played this game before, the bleep and bloop sounds will bring back fond memories.

The game controls include the classic control option, the touch screen control option and the accelerometer controls. In the first one, you have an on screen joystick to control the laser. The second one is the least functional while the last mode is the coolest one amongst them all.

This game has what it takes to keep the player entertained. However, considering the fact that Retro Game Challenge is available on DS, it remains to be seen whether anyone would want to pay for this game on the iPhone. There is nothing wrong with the game. However, the question is whether the game is good enough to attract the gamers. The developers could have at least added some new features to the game to make it more interesting. If you’re desperate for some space invaders on your iPhone, then this game is worth getting. For everyone else though, there is nothing new here, and not much point in getting the game.

Score: 6/10

Google Earth for You Iphone Review

Google Earth for You Iphone Review

Google Earth for the iPhone

You guessed it. Google’s developers have been hard at work,  because they just released Google Earth for the iPhone. That amazing program that we have all spent hours playing with, is just a touch away.  This version of Google Earth is as ever bit impressive as the desktop application.

Pros

The multi-touch interface makes this program very easy to use and navigate around. It has all the same remarkable satellite and aerial imagery as the desktop version. Leave it to Google to integrate the browser into this app which allows you to directly link to Wikipedia related articles and photos from Panoramio. Plus you can seamlessly jump from the browser back to Google Earth. It also can adjust to the terrain.

Cons

A setback with the tilt function built into Google Earth, is if you hand it to someone it will tilt and move the focus which can get annoying. On a positive note, you can turn the auto-tilt feature off under the settings option.  Each time you start the program it will zoom in to the last place you looked at, which wastes unnecessary time.  The current version does not have the ability to show street names. It looses functionality points with us on this part.

Outcome

This is probably one of the better Apps we’ve seen in a while.  It really shows of the processing power and graphic ability of the iPhone. Google Earth’s iPhone App, is a definite winner in our book.

Bejeweled 2 for iPhone Review

Bejeweled 2 for iPhone Review

Bejeweled 2 is a classic puzzler, and the sequel to the original Bejeweled, which has also seen release on the iPhone, from developer Popcap games. The popularity of Bejeweled 2 has made it a cornerstone of many gaming sites, including many skill-based gaming/gambling sites such as king.com, where it’s one of the most fiercely contested games.

Bejeweled 2 will set you back , making it one of the more pricey games available for the iPhone, especially as the game can be played (at least partially) for free at many different online sites. Is it worth the cost to have the ability to play it on the go? What if anything is new to this version of Bejeweled 2? Read on for the answers.

All popular puzzle games are those which are very easy to understand but very difficult to master. This was the norm as far as puzzle games were concerned in the past and is definitely the norm as far as Bejeweled 2 is concerned. There are two modes to play this game. However, there is not a lot of difference between the two modes.

At the start of a stage you’re presented with a collection of various colored gems filling the screen. Your goal is to connect these jewels together to create a chain of 3 or more of the same jewel. You do this by simple dragging any gem you wish to move over to an adjacent vertical or horizontal space. If your move doesn’t result in a match of three or more identical shapes being made, it will be reset. This prevents you from simply dragging a shape anywhere you want to.

Sounds simple enough, and it is, but the real trick to the game is in setting up combos and larger chains. Much like chess, you must think ahead and instantly be able to recognize how doing one thing will affect everything else that is going on. Simply plowing through the game by matching everything in sight may get you a decent score if you’re fast enough, and you may very well stumble upon combos and larger chains at times, but the game can only truly be mastered by those who can actively ‘create’ their own combos.

The trick to winning a large number of points in the shortest possible time is to create long chains to obtain greater bonuses. Creating a chain consisting of four jewels will result in a glowing gem on the board. Once this glowing gem too is matched in a chain, a bunch of gems surrounding the glowing gem will be destroyed and your points tally will see a big increase. A five gem chain is the biggest chain that you can create. This move results in a super gem being created which, if matched in a three jewel chain, will destroy all the gems on the board. Large chains apart, a combo will also help you increase your points. A combo is created when the creation of a single chain leads to realignment of the position of other gems into chains without any additional moves.

In a puzzle game, fancy graphics and effects often distract the players from the actual game. This game strikes the right balance and ensures that the good looking graphics and background images do not distract the players. The creation of a combo or a chain results in a colorful display on the screen. However, apart from this, there is said nothing in the graphics or effects that distract you from the game. This is a good thing because this leaves you free to focus on the gameplay.

The audio production is much like the graphics, very solid, but ultimately limited in scope. The various sound effects are particularly pleasing to the ears, while the music is very laid back and conducive to thoughtful gaming for the most part.

The lack of any type of score keeping in the form of a high scores list is certainly disappointing, as this is a staple of games of this type, and has been since the dawn of gaming. Bejeweled 2 also lacks any additional modes or variations of any kind to separate it from the many different versions already out there, also somewhat of a disappointment.

Overall, Bejeweled 2 is a good puzzle game. However, this game often seems very random instead of being challenging or strategic as good puzzle games ought to be.  It may take months for an individual to master this game which is a good thing. The price is on the high side and those playing this game for the first time may find it too expensive. However, for those have played this game, it certainly is a good choice to keep yourself occupied

Game Score: 6 out of 10

Apple Iphone Review – Should You Buy The Apple Iphone Now, Or Wait?

Apple Iphone Review – Should You Buy The Apple Iphone Now, Or Wait?

There has been a ton of buzz lately about Apple’s iPhone and for good reason. The iPhone is an innovative take on the cellular phone handset and it incorporates a lot of really great features. Having said that, should you rush out to buy the 1st generation Apple iPhone or wait for future releases of the handset? In this article, I’m going to give you some food for thought that you should consider before making a decision one way or the other.

As with virtually any new technology-related product release, there will be iPhone bugs to deal with. The first generation Apple iPhone is already catching criticism for things such as earpiece volume, battery life, and battery replacement. If I know anything about Apple, I know that they listen to user feedback and you can bet the ranch that the biggest complaints voiced over their 1st generation version will be addressed in future iPhone models.

Another reason to wait is pricing. As you’ve already seen, Apple drastically lowered their iPhone pricing just months after the initial launch. To be honest, I expected to see a price drop, but not that soon and certainly not by that much. Anytime you purchase the newest technology riding on a wave of hype and excitement, you’re going to pay top dollar for it.

So the verdict? If you can control the urge to buy the latest and greatest toy from Apple for just a little while longer, you’ll most likely end up with a product that you’ll be more satisfied with, and at a price that won’t pull on the pursestrings quite as hard. Don’t get me wrong, I love the iPhone and think it’s a fantastic product worth buying, however, it would serve you best in my opinion to wait for the next release. No matter what you decide, enjoy it… it’s a great gadget!
