[47/365] iPhone 3.0 Internet Tethering & MMS on O2 UK

As those of you that follow the many mac related blogs will know, someone hacking around in the code of the new iPhone 3.0 beta found that there was indeed built in support for internet tethering, the process of allowing you to use the iPhone 3G / Edge connection to provide network access to another device (e.g. a MacBook). Apple acknowledged that support was built in yet was dependent on network provider and therefore wasn’t available yet.
After doing a bit of research, I managed to find the IPCC file which contains the network settings for O2 UK (my network) pre-hacked to enable not only internet tethering but also MMS which still hasn’t been turned on by O2 (who haven’t replied to my emails about why it isn’t available yet). You can download the file at drop.io/o2ukipcc and getting set up is as easy as holding alt (or shift if you’re on windows) whilst clicking the "check for updates" button on the iPhone screen of iTunes. This will open a browse dialog box in which you need to choose the IPCC file that you just downloaded. Pressing OK will update your iPhone with the new network settings (takes around 5 seconds) and then after restarting your iPhone you’ll find the MMS options are all available (including a camera icon within the Messages app) and the Internet Tethering panel is now available within Settings -> Network.
This photo shows my MacBook successfully using the internet via O2 thanks to my iPhone connection. You can connect via either BlueTooth or USB but I couldn’t quite get the BlueTooth connection going so am using the standard dock cable in this photo. I’ve opened up iTunes so you can see the version number (and also that there is a new "Phone Number" section) and also Network Utility which shows the USB Connection transferring data correctly. You can also see the network is O2-UK on the iPhone and that there is no ethernet or wireless network enabled on the MacBook.
I found the speed to be very good at home with full reception of 3G but I don’t know how well it will fare under different circumstances (e.g. on a moving train) but I’ll try and find out tomorrow. It’s also debatable as to how long this particular hack will work once O2 find out about it but it’s interesting to see it working for the time being. Oh, and I don’t take any responsibility if you apply the hack and end up with a bricked iPhone that doubles as a paper weight, or if the phone blows up, sleeps with your wife, takes up a career in bank management, or any other number of wild possibilities.
If you have the iPhone 3.0 beta but are not on the O2-UK network, then you can learn about how to make your own IPCC file at gist.github.com/81465
Update 21st Mar 09: In order to get internet tethering working correctly, you need to have the 3.0 SDK installed on the machine you are tethering. This is because it patches some system files and iTunes to make it all work correctly (no tethering for you windows!). I’ve also done some tests out and about and can confirm that the tethering works fine when on a moving train switching between 3G, Edge, and GPRS. If you lose signal, it’ll just reconnect again automatically when it gets signal again. Also, with MMS in the UK, you need to get O2 to turn on your MMS settings as well as running the IPCC update in order to get the ability to send and receive. I found the best way was to email them as you can explain exactly what you want – the call centre staff don’t seem to understand about the 3.0 update!
Update 24th Mar 09: The above IPCC file doesn’t work for O2-UK Pay As You Go (PAYG) but luckily Scott Wilcox has made one available for download at http://media.tig.gr/download/o2_uk.ipcc – You install this in the same way as the file above. Please note that MMS on PAYG cost 35p and do not come out of your SMS allowance like the contract ones do.
Update 27th Mar 09: O2 have taken the strange decision not to enable any more accounts with MMS. I’m currently debating it with them and you can see it unfolding on the O2 forums – will update here when more details are available.
Update 31st Mar 09: Beta 2 of the iPhone 3.0 OS is now available from developer.apple.com/iphone/ for registered developers. Doesn’t appear to be any new features but will hopefully fix a few crashing bugs! I’ll post an update shortly as to if the IPCC file still works but my gut feel is that it should do.
Update 1st Apr 09: iPhone 3.0 Beta 2 still allows internet tethering if you use one of the IPCC hacks detailed on this page. Bluetooth tethering still doesn’t work but the overall OS is smoother and less buggy.
Update 2nd Apr 09: Just tried pairing my G4 Mac Mini with my iPhone via bluetooth and it worked first time with internet tethering! Seems to be that the new unibody macbooks don’t want to play with bluetooth but you may have some success with the older models. The key difference I noticed was that my macbook didn’t make me type a pin number into the iPhone to make it pair whereas the mac mini made the iPhone prompt me to type the pin displayed on the mac mini.
Update 14th Apr 09: iPhone 3.0 Beta 3 (9M2728) is now available from the Apple iPhone Developer site. There are a few new features mainly relating to the iPod application (e.g. better scrubbing through songs, more information on podcasts, etc) but mainly it’s bug fixes and stability improvements. Both MMS and Internet Tethering are still working on my iPhone (activated by O2) with the IPCC patch above applied.
Update 29th Apr 09: iPhone 3.0 Beta 4 (7A300g) is now available from the Apple iPhone Developer site. This version is slightly different in that it demands you install iTunes 8.2 beta which is also available from the Apple iPhone Developer site. There are several notices when installing about sending information to Apple to be verified which leads me to believe that they are cracking down on jailbroken or pirated copies. I’ve installed Beta 4 but had to do a full restore after the installation froze halfway through updating. There are not many new features apart from the ability to sync with Google Calendar (amongst others) and a newly designed "Store" section in Settings which just gives you information about your iTunes account. I assume this will be used for in-app purchasing. The only other interesting point about this release is that you can now sync notes with your mac although that requires OS X 10.5.7 which of course isn’t yet available – this suggests it will be available very shortly. MMS and tethering are still working for me after applying the IPCC update posted above (although it is subject to O2 activation although I’ve heard a few people have managed to persuade them to activate recently).
Update 6th May 09: It looks like you can now enable USB Internet Tethering by having iTunes 8.2 Beta installed – previously you had to have the SDK installed but this doesn’t seem to be a requirement anymore as they must have bundled the necessary usb->ethernet driver with iTunes. That’s good news for any windows users out there!
Update 7th May 09: iPhone 3.0 Beta 5 (7A312g) is now available for download. There are no major updates apart from parental controls but the bad news is that you can no longer perform the IPCC update through iTunes 8.2 beta thus meaning no more enabling of MMS or Internet Tethering. Boo! However, I always said from day one that this would happen so I’m kind of surprised it took 5 betas for them to stop that….
Update 7th May 09: Apparently you can keep MMS if you don’t use the latest beta of iTunes 8.2 but instead use the version that shipped with iPhone 3.0 Beta 4 – that way you can still sideload the IPCC file onto the phone and it will work. I imagine this will get patched with Beta 6 (in that it will require you to update iTunes) but this will keep people going a little longer. In other news, Apple sent an email to all developers stating that all apps now being submitted to the App Store will be tested on 3.0 and if they don’t work they won’t be going in the store. They also mention they’ll be removing existing apps from the App Store that don’t work with 3.0 – "After iPhone OS 3.0 becomes available to customers, any app that is incompatible with iPhone OS 3.0 may be removed from the App Store."
Update 8th May 09: It turns out that it is possible to enable MMS on O2 contracts without the IPCC file hack that was required previously. You can instead go to "Settings"->"General"->"Network"->"Cellular Data Network" on your iPhone and fill out the MMS section with the following details (note that you need to restart the phone after filling these settings in):
APN: wap.o2.co.uk
Username: o2wap
Password: password
MMSC: mmsc.mms.o2.co.uk:8002
Proxy: 193.113.200.195:8080
MMS Max Message Size: [leave blank]
MMS UA Prof URL: [leave blank]
Thanks to "squigles" on the O2 forums for pointing this out. Please note that you still need to have MMS activated on your account by O2.
There is currently no known way of enabling Internet Tethering on Beta 5 without either upgrading from a previous version that had the IPCC hack applied or instead using an earlier version of iTunes to load the IPCC file on.
Update 10th June 09: The WWDC announcement has been and gone and the iPhone 3.0 GM (gold master) is now available for download to iPhone devs. The final build will be released to the public on the 17th June 09 with the new iPhone 3G S following two days later in six countries (i’ll be posting pics and a review when I get my hands on it). Interestingly, in the UK tethering is being priced at around Β£15 for 3GB and Β£30 for 10GB but a few people have found a way around it for the time being (see comments below). However, I think this will be blocked by the carriers very shortly so looks like we’ll have to pay if we want Internet Tethering.
Update 18th June 09: Want to get Internet Tethering for free on O2 without the bolt-on? It looks like you do as this picture has had 5000 hits in under two days for those very search terms… so I’d best oblige you! Simply point Safari ON YOUR IPHONE at help.benm.at/uk.php and click the "O2 Vertigo" link – this will download all the settings you need for Internet Tethering to become enabled – just click the "Install" button and the APN settings will be entered for you. Now go to Settings->Network and marvel as Internet Tethering becomes an option screen where you can turn it on or off. If you are using a new macbook, please make sure to do a software update in order to get bluetooth updates that will make tethering via bluetooth work. Enjoy π
Update 19th June 09: It looks like O2 are going to go legal with the Terms of Service with people who use the Internet Tethering work around described above. Get the details at www.techradar.com/news/phone-and-communications/mobile-ph… – at the moment it sounds like scaremongering but it could develop into something more sinister. I’d recommend that people still use the tethering hack but try not to use too much data (e.g. email and website browsing is probably fine – streaming youtube or torrents isn’t)
As a side note, you can follow me on Twitter for these kinds of updates!
I recommend using the ‘all sizes’ option on the photo to be able to see all of the details clearly
Day 47 of 365
@karlpsp07 – Have you phoned or emailed O2 and got them to activate MMS on your account? You need to do that before it will let you send them. The IPCC hack only enables the MMS parts of the iPhone UI.
Eish… good luck getting o2 to turn on MMS, I’m getting fobbed of with a bunch of excuses.
Meh.
The most reliable way of getting in touch with them and getting them to activate is to email them via https://www.o2.co.uk/apps/help/help – Just say you are an iPhone developer with the 3.0 beta from Apple and you need MMS activated on your account and they’ll do it.
Loaded the new ipcc file onto my iPhone and restarted but don’t get the MMS options. Does the phone need to be running V3.0 software.
Currently on 2.2.1 (5H11)
Yes, it needs 3.0 software.
I emailed o2 as suggested and received the following reply:
Thanks for emailing us about activating MMS on your iPhone.
I understand that you want to activate MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) on your iPhone.
I’m sorry currently we’re unable to action this because MMS is not compatible with iPhone tariffs.
I hope you’ll find this information useful.
Yes O2 have decided to stop activating iPhones with MMS – You can see the debate on the O2 forums at forum.o2.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=16693&postdays=0&p…
Random question but does your phone number show in iTunes when you dock your phone?
rite i have emailed them saying im a dev and that i would liek to test mms on 3.0 beta can they please turn it on. if o2 have decided not to turn it on why are they putting it in the os 3.0? are they going to turn it on when it gets public released?
one more question, when willi be able to jailbreak the iphone 3g on 3.0 os beta via windows? i hope the dev team arn’t wating for public release
@lilrotex – Yes your phone number shows up in iTunes now if you plug your iPhone in. This is most likely due to the setting on the iPhone 3.0 called "phone number" which you have to enter for MMS the first time you open the messages app.
@karlpsp07 – O2 have just stopped enabling MMS for developers so we’ll just have to wait and see I’m afraid. O2 haven’t put it in the 3.0 beta and by default it’s not enabled within the UK (hence the IPCC hack file which makes the UI options available). I don’t know the reasons why they are not allowing it but it’s probably something legal. I’m fairly sure it will be available again soon though and definitely when it launches in the summer. As for jailbreaking, as far as I know the jailbreak team are working on it and should have it hacked shortly. It will be ready before the public release.
do you know anything about the bluetooth on the iphone 3.0? will it be possible to send files via it to other phone that arnt iphones when it gets public release? will they bring out the mac jailbreak first or the windows jailbreak first for 3.0 beta o.s as i have windows
where will i find the 3.0 jailbreak when its out?
what if someone ssh’d into the iphone 3.0 beta wouln;t they be abvel to ssh cydia.app over?
@karlpsp07 – As far as I can tell, the bluetooth hasn’t been updated apart from to allow internet tethering and stereo headsets. I can’t get either of these to work with the current beta so assume they are still working on it. I doubt it will be able to share with other phones though.
With the jailbreak, it’s not specific to operating systems, only to the software on the phone. If you do a google for "jailbreak iphone 3.0" you’ll find a wealth of rumours and information but the current status is that it probably has been jailbreaked but it hasn’t been released to the community yet. Subscribe to some mac blogs and you’ll soon find out when it is released – and no you can’t just ssh into the iPhone 3.0 beta as ssh is only enabled once you’ve jailbroken it π
i see, coudnt somebody just use something like the 3.0 sdk or pwange tool to jailbreak the 3.0 ebta ipsw or dmg then just add cydia and installer? on a few websites they are saying somebody will have to make a custom 3.0 beta ispw or dmg so why yhasnt anyone done it yet?
@karlpsp07 They probably have – the problem is at the moment the software is beta so if they go to the effort of doing that then Apple will just patch it. If they don’t release the patch until the official launch, then it will take Apple longer to patch as they don’t like releasing lots of patches to consumers just to stop jailbreaks as consumers don’t like downloading loads of patches
rite, youd think the dev team would of posted a status update on jailbreaking it instead of jsut saying it can be done. and a very stupid queistion but why do only mac’s have pwange tool? windows had winpwn before that went redundant and now quick pwn but windows has no way of cretaing custom ispw’s does it? or is their some software to do it with that i dont know about
@karlpsp07 Well the status update is that it’s cracked but they’re not releasing it yet. As for creating custom ispw’s on windows, I don’t know – I use a mac π
can i plug my iphone drectly into a p a system? as i am a elvis impersonater by day and dev by ntie. and it would be usefull if i could play my backing tracks via my iphone into my p.a as my p a has a xlr socket also a 2.5mm socket
@karlpsp07 You’d need an adapter to do it but you can convert the 3.5mm headphone jack into a 2.5mm output for your PA.
would i need a app? or would the voice memos of 3.0 beta work?
(to record)
@karlpsp07 – If you wanted to play backing tracks from your iPhone out to a PA system, then you don’t need any software, just the adapter from 3.5mm headphone out to 2.5mm jack. You’d then play your backing tracks within the iPod app and they’d come out of your PA.
To record yourself, you can use the voice memos app but as far as I know there are no external microphones or a microphone input so the quality probably wouldn’t be great.
ok, maybe i could send you one of my recording and you could give marks out of 10 for jhow much i sound like elvis?
ermm ok…
ben do u like elvis?
ben i have sucsefully jailbroken the version 3.0 beta using my own software that i made. would you like me to send you it alone with a readme so you can test it on your iphone 3g. then i will release ti to the public. as yet it only adds cydia and installer to the iphone 3g. please get back ot me
@karlpsp07 No I don’t really want to jailbreak my iPhone – I’m most likely going to revert back to the 2.* release as 3.0 is proving a little unstable for my needs.
ok but the jailbreak i have will make the 3.0 firmwear alot more stable its actualym roe stable than 2.2.1
Uh-huh.. I’ve got the 3.0 beta 2 now which is more than stable enough for my needs.
I had no issues getting Bluetooth tethering to work. It was as simple as pairing with the iPhone and then choosing to connect to the iPhone’s network from the Bluetooth menu extra.
The iPhone SDK doesn’t patch system files or iTunes. It merely installs the Apple USB-to-Ethernet kernel extension which allows the iPhone to be recognised as an Ethernet-like network port.
MMS won’t be available on the iPhone 2G for the simple reason that MMS is part of the 3G specification and is not an option on 2G networks. This means MMS requires a 3G network connection.
Does the new beta 7A259 break existing tethering or MMS with the previous beta? I’m afraid to install it as I don’t want to lose what I’ve got just now.
Can someone try calling O2 to get MMS switched on but don’t mention it’s an iPhone. Say it’s an O2 Xda. They were prepared to do it for me but then I didn’t know my company’s O2 account password. lol.
UPDATE: I just chose to update to the new release. iPhone has come up apparently normal and I didn’t have to restore all my music and ringtones. An MMS appears to have sent too. I can’t confirm full MMS yet. Tethering worked as before for both Bluetooth and USB. Can’t tell if there is any improvements for me yet.
@mcnaugha The bluetooth tethering seems to not be working on the latest unibody macbooks – I’ve seen it working on other machines and can pair my iPhone and macbook but they refuse to connect. Doesn’t bother me though as it’s not a feature I’d use (as always have phone connected by usb)
Full MMS works just fine on the latest beta build as does tethering as it says in the notes added to the photo. The only changes are that push notification apps can now be built as can apps support in-app purchasing (as denoted by the new ‘store’ menu item under ‘settings’). Overall stability is also dramatically improved.
Not sure about calling O2 to enable MMS – they can presumably tell it’s an iPhone account based on the fact it would be using an iPhone tariff?
right heres a update my iphone3 g is nwo a brick i was playing on the iphone 3.0 beta JB and it randomly froze did the screen so i turned off my iphone then it woudnt turn back on so i pluged it into my pc and itunes didnt detect it so i put in in DFU mode and i tried to restore it to 3.0 and then to 2.2.1 then to 3.0 beta 2 i kept getting 1601 message ive tried everything different pc and different usb and deleting itunes plus device support and reinstalling no difference i think my iphone is briked. is their anything i can do? ive even triedd restoring without my sim card installed no difference i would apreciate any help you have ben.
can anyone help?
Try this – http://www.beyondthebits.com/?p=246
And yeah, the lesson is don’t jailbreak an iPhone π
I have just added MMS and Tethering to my iPhone. Can anyone tell me how to set-up USB teathering as I cant seem to find how and as for MMS, I was able to send a message but had to use a 3rd party app or o2.co.uk to view it.
that guide is for mac’s i have pc on windows xp
@t.matthews777 – You’ll need to have the 3.0 SDK installed on your machine (needs to be a mac) to get USB tethering to work. Once you’ve installed, plug your iPhone in with internet tethering turned on and it will install the necessary usb->ethernet driver to make it all work. To get MMS working correctly, you need O2 to enable your account but there not doing that anymore (see above for all the details – I’ve added updates to the main post)
@karlpsp07 – If you’d gone through the article you would have seen the link to an article detailing for windows. Here is the link – http://support.apple.com/kb/TA38633?viewlocale=en_US
yes i know uinstalling then reinstallign itunes was the first thing i tried no differance cept i get error 1600 instead of 1601 the first time i try to restore. itunes ONLY detects my iphone in DFU mode or recovery mode. any help?
@karlpsp07 Well if the instructions provided by Apple aren’t working then take it to an Apple store – just don’t mention the whole jailbreak thing!
got a new iphoen and installed the file, on o2 u k contract no offence but the file is useless it doesnt send o2 wont activate mms for anyone cos they say it isnt on any iphone contract
@karlpsp07 well the file doesn’t enable MMS as clearly stated in all of the text above and it has been discussed here as well as in other places that MMS isn’t being enabled by O2 anymore as Apple have said that it isn’t supported yet. There is no way (with any hack or firmware) to enable MMS if the carrier hasn’t activated your account – this file merely enables the UI for those that have been activated (as activation from your carrier won’t enable MMS on the phone as you need this file to patch it to enable the UI options).
thanks for sharing! i managed to get tethering working for about 5 minutes, was super happy…then the connection just stopped working. I turned off/on tethering again, i unplug and plugged in the usb…no go.
do you have the same experience? is your tethering connection stable?
thanks dude.
@regardless – I’m sorry to hear that it’s not been working stably! Mine has been ok (apart from the reception dropping occasionally but that’s normal) but I may have done something different. My advice would be to completely wipe the phone (I always do a full wipe rather than an update when installing a new version or a beta) and install the iPhone 3.0 beta 3 and see if that resolves it as there may just be conflicts with older versions etc. Make sure you also have the latest version of the SDK installed on your mac as this installs the usb->ethernet driver required to make the tethering working (so it may be you have an old version of the SDK with a new beta firmware and there is a bug there somehow).
So latest version of iPhone beta from complete install (not update) and the latest version of the SDK would be my thoughts! Hope that helps π
Hiya i got O2 to activate mms etc… seems to work fine, my only problem is when i sent multiple messages it sends them all as mms, so probs costin me a fortune, any ideas how to fix this ????
@DeaNHtiD99 Congrats on getting O2 to activate you! I’m not sure how you’d fix that (there isn’t a setting I’m aware of, hidden or otherwise). A bit of a long workaround would be that before you send a multiple recipient message, go into the messages settings and turn off MMS (it’s an on-off toggle) as that way it’ll be forced to use SMS. A bit of a hassle but it’ll save you money whilst they sort it out. I’m sure it’ll all work properly in the final release.
how did you get o2 to activate you? are they doing activations now?
@DeaNHtiD99 – They’ve fixed the bug in the latest beta (iPhone 3.0 Beta 4). When you add multiple recipients it remains as an SMS unless you add an email address (instead of a phone number) in which case it switches to MMS.
USB Tethering on PC (under Vista works well) as does Bluetooth Tethering in 3.0B4 on iPhone 3G 16Gb
MMS worked for me sending, but receiving is still by link – O2 have promised to have this ready by the time the full 3.0 software is released
Ah it looks like USB tethering will now work on a PC or a Mac if you have iTunes 8.2 beta – previously you had to install the SDK which obviously meant windows users couldn’t have it.
It’s strange that MMS sending is working but you’re receiving a link back – that suggests that MMS isn’t enabled at their end but then it shouldn’t be sending. Weird!
Annoying o2 are not activating MMS anymore, I have tried calling and emailing, I get the same standard responses word for word previously posted and verbally.
Very annoying since I have a legit developers license since the very start, they should activate for legitimate developers otherwise how are you supposed to do any testing prior to public release (MUPPETS).
@shamrockdisposals I hate to disagree with you but Apple have publicly stated that MMS is not a part of the beta and should not be tested. You can read this in the iPhone SDK Release Notes on the developer site:
"During the beta period, MMS and device tethering are not supported, and should not be used."
O2 only activated a handful of people at the start because we asked them to and they didn’t have a policy. As soon as management found out, they stopped all future activations presumably as a result of a large number of non-developers getting activated with cracked iPhones and also due to Apple saying it’s not part of the beta. It doesn’t need to be tested by developers as you can’t use it in the SDK or build apps based on tethering or MMS (and besides you can only get the MMS / tethering options if you hack the IPCC carrier file anyway which is probably a grey area…. I did it but then they haven’t cut me off yet!)
So, it’s fine to be annoyed that you can’t have MMS yet but you can’t call O2 muppets as Apple have stated that we shouldn’t use it. Will just have to wait until June π
I missed Apple’s statement, hence the rant.
I still don’t agree with o2 policies. I can’t see any reason why MMS isn’t a permanent facility on the cell network anyway, irrespective of whether the iPhone supports it, if they had their systems setup properly, anytime in the future that someone used their iPhone SIM in an MMS capable handset or if iPhone incorporated the feature (as per 3.x), their systems should be able to handle the service and charge accordingly, its not rocket science.
Let me make one thing clear, I am no fan of MMS, exactly the opposite. I completely agree with Apple original reasoning, not to put old technology in a modern smart phone.
e.g. why would someone want to send a cut down picture over the cellular network and have to pay for the privilege, when you can send the full picture in an email?
I can also understand why Apple bowed to pressure though, it was because of the constant berating of misinformed people saying " the iPhone can’t even do MMS" when it already has a better facility through email, its not iPhones users fault these people have inferior handsets and MMS is still their only option to get pictures.
This just tick’s off another box.
Once the new handset comes out with video, those people that like to moan and pick faults with any product/company they don’t use, won’t actually have anything substantial to pick fault at, you will just see comments like "its rubbish" with no substance or foundation π
From Engadget: π
Update: We can confirm that MMS "support" can no longer be turned on in Settings (in quotes because we could never get it working in previous betas anyhow), and we’re hearing that trickery that allowed tethering to be enabled with the previous iTunes 8.2 build has been patched. Aww, you’re no fun, Apple… thanks, Rene!
Yes I can confirm that you can no longer perform the IPCC update. This isn’t anything to do with iPhone 3.0 but instead a patch in iTunes 8.2 beta (b10) which won’t let you select IPCC files as valid updates. I imagine this will be removed when iTunes 8.2 goes live (as it is necessary in some cases) but at the moment the only people that would be using it are people trying to alter the IPCC file to enable MMS or Internet Tethering which Apple have already said is excluded from the beta.
Oh well, it was fun whilst it lasted. On the plus side, iPhone 3.0 Beta 5 is even more stable so there is real progress being made and it’s only a month or so until the final version should be shipped so I’m sure we’ll all have MMS back soon.
And I completely agree with shamrockdisposals above – I’ve never seen the point of MMS and have always just used MMS. I really hope the video stuff is in the new iPhone and I’m very hopeful that they’ll pull something like HD out of the mac (just 720p like the Flip Mini but still enough to kick the competition out of the water)
i have actualy managed to find a way to get mms working on beta 5 but its useless as o2 havent activated anyone so im not going to say how to do it yet.
@karlpsp07 well I’m activated so I’d be interested to know how you’ve done it….
I’ve added a new update to main description – it turns out you can keep MMS on iPhone 3.0 Beta 5 but you have to use the version of iTunes that was released with the Beta 4 release (not the Beta 5 one that is patched).
Can anyone supply a link for the UK payasyougo o2 ipcc as the one in the link above is no longer working. Once I have the file I can host on my web server if anyone else needs it
jst99
I’ve contacted the site owner and the link will be back up again shortly.
jst99 i have a copy on my desktop not sure how i can get it to you
Thanks guys, I have managed to find a file that I have been able to edit that now has mms and tethering working on my 3G payg beta4 – will see if file is different in size when the site becomes live again – I have uploaded it to my site and if Ben agrees I can post the URL
@jst99 – Be my guest π
Although the other link is now working agian the file can be downloaded from here: http://www.iphone-os3.co.uk/downloads/o2_uk.ipcc
hi iv got o2 iphone 3g with beta 5 on it and just did this and usb tethering and bluetooth tethering it working fine thanks
HI just a note to say have a o2 iphone 3g 8gb os 3.0 beta 5 on iphone pay monthly tarrif and all works gr8 tethering (windows vista 64) mms i can now send but still o2 massage saying log on to web site to view ect.. Thanks π
@zcott – I imagine that’s to do with the OS X 10.5.7 update? I haven’t been able to test it as I installed Beta 5 from restore and so don’t have the tethering option!
hey anyone know when iphone 3.0 beta 6 os is coming out?
Apple will know π
In all seriousness, nobody will know outside of Apple HQ. it’s very close to WWDC now though and Beta 5 was very stable so my guess would be that Beta 6 will be available on the 8th June a couple hours after the keynote. My other guess would be that they’re waiting until then because a new iPhone will be launched in that keynote and so Beta 6 (and the SDK) will have a whole load of new APIs to access the new iPhone hardware.
so beta 6 is june 8th? when is final public release?
June 8th is when the WWDC Keynote is happening so I would suggest it’s a likely date for Beta 6 but that’s pure speculation on my part. The final public release date hasn’t been announced yet but I’m sure it will be announced on June 8th (the date of the launch will be announced then). I would assume it will be some time in late June / early July. They are preparing for it soon as highlighted by today’s public release of iTunes 8.2 which is mainly updated to support iPhone 3.0
omfg ben i luv u cheers! you dont know how much that helped youve saved me mwah
ive got iphone 3g v 3.0 beta 1 how kl am i
hey i have 3.0 os gm now running on my iphone but mms still isnt working when will it be?
Send the word "MMS" to "1010" from your iPhone and O2 will enable MMS for you. You’ll need to have iPhone 3.0 Beta 6 (which is known as the GM or "Gold Master") for that to work.
HOW TO ENABLE BOTH MMS & TETHERING ON O2
1. I installed the new iPhone OS 3.0 GM that was released yesterday.
http://www.funkyspacemonkey.com/download-iphone-os-30-gm
MMS was enabled but Tethering was disabled.
2. Still I sent the word "MMS" to "1010" from iPhone and O2 enabled MMS just in case.
3. Then got a copy of the iTunes 8.2 beta that came with iPhone OS 3.0 Beta 4 because the new itunes does not allow you to install IPCC file.
http://www.ihackintosh.com/2009/04/iphone-30-beta-4-and-itunes-8...
4. Install the IPCC hack in this post with the itunes 8.2 beta that came with iphone OS 3.0 beta 4 and restart iphone.
drop.io/o2ukipcc
After restart, Tethering was enabled but MMS was disabled now.
5. I then rentered the MMS apn settings and restarted my phone.
To put in MMS apn setterings: go to "Settings"->"General"->"Network"->"Cellular Data Network" on your iPhone and fill out the MMS section with the following details (note that you need to restart the phone after filling these settings in):
APN: wap.o2.co.uk
Username: o2wap
Password: password
MMSC: mmsc.mms.o2.co.uk:8002
Proxy: 193.113.200.195:8080
MMS Max Message Size: [leave blank]
MMS UA Prof URL: [leave blank]
6. After restart, I sent the word "MMS" to "1010" again from iPhone and O2 enabled MMS.
Now both MMS and Tethering were enabled for iPhone OS 3.0 GM.
There currently appears to be no way to get MMS AND Tethering to work at the same time. The type-mask of 2 appears to tell the iPhone to use that APN for tethering AND MMS. MMS only works with o2wap, tethering only works with mobileweb.
It’s probably just a case of figuring out the different type-masks though.
I would think that any altering of settings to get tethering working will stop soon as they will simply have check your mobile number when you connect and if you don’t have the bolt-on they’ll block it. It’s a nice trick for now though π
i text mms to 1010 to o2 and they text me back saying ‘the new iphone version 3.0 comes out june 17th text us then’ how do i get it enabled now?
ok update, i txt o2 MMS 1010 and got the text back that it was set up wif a picture in the message i tried sending a mms but it just does what it did before it just locks at sending then says sending failed? also i dont think i have the rite ipcc file the link doesnt work so i had to look for it but i think i got the pay as you go one
You need to be using the iPhone 3.0 Beta GM (gold master) and you don’t need any IPCC files. Do a full restore of your iPhone with the latest beta and then text "MMS" to 1010 and it’ll work. Or wait until next week when the actual release comes out π
i got both tethering and MMS working in GM 3.0, and you dont need to downgrade iTunes. type " defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE "
in terminal without the "quotes" and then you can load the custom ipcc to itunes. Restart the phone and you have tethering. Then use the MMS settings from above and it all works. I didnt need to text O2 (1010) to reactivate either.
APN: wap.o2.co.uk
Username: o2wap
Password: password
MMSC: mmsc.mms.o2.co.uk:8002
Proxy: 193.113.200.195:8080
MMS Max Message Size: [leave blank]
MMS UA Prof URL: [leave blank]
Got tethering working…and it spontaneously disappeared. The option just vanished. I think there’s something afoot.
With MMS, you can type the settings in manually or you can text O2 and they’ll do it automatically and it will always work that way. With tethering, there are ways around it at the moment but as it all goes through O2 they can simply enable access at their end for people that don’t have the bolt on so I’m sure it won’t be working for very long.
ben im not stupid i was using 3.0 GM
when i text them and i text them once but they replyed twice first time to say they wont enable mms intil june 17th and second time with a mms saying its all set up so i restarted my iphone on 3.0 gm then it just frezes at more than half way then after about five mins is says the ! and i hit try again and i get the same. but what i have noticed is i can send a mms to 1010 but not to any of my contracts? any help? :
iphone 3.0 GM
windows
Mr Glyn
My findings are that tethering will work just fine until you put the mms settings in and then try to tether again. For the time being I’ll just tether my winmo until someone figures the type masks.
*update* about 1 of two mms’ i send work so just hit try again i think and it should send if it doesn’t send the first time. last question when 3.0 final comes out as public release will i be able to upgrade in tunes? like normal i meen?
Yes you’ll be able to upgrade through iTunes. My suggestion to everybody would be to do a full restore with the new software rather than an upgrade as that will prevent problems with old settings and configurations being copied across.
as for tethering it came uo the first time saying ‘contact o2 to set up tethering’ then it just left before i could turn it on
Nice one for the .ipcc file! Got it all working π Now we just have to wait and see what happens tomorrow… This article provided a little help: http://www.9to5mac.com/9to5mac-tether-iPhone-hack
where is 3.0? june 17th!
@karlpsp07 – It turns out the GM beta is the same as the 3.0 that was launched today so iTunes won’t automatically update you as you are already up-to-date.
ok im on 3.0 final now from itunes. problem is i text MMS to 1010 like the wesbite says and then o2 will set up mms but when i text MMS to 1010 i dont get any text back and ive tried texting them about 7 times. also if you try to download anything from the app store it says itunes terms and conditions have changed so i hit accept then it trys to take me to the new terms and conditions screen but it takes adges then it just says either cannot connect to itunes store or unable to download. this is with iphone connected to wifi. i would appreciate amy help you have on these problems. karl.
Please note that I’ve added an update to the photo description detailing how to get Internet Tethering for free on O2 with the public release of 3.0 – it’s under "Update 18th June 09" – enjoy π
on my iphone i now have 3.0 final from itunes released on june 17th but now when i try to send a mms it doesnt work i get ! error. ive tried texting MMS to 1010 like the website advises but i never get a text back. any help ?
pls
@karlpsp – what iPhone tariff are you on and did you wipe the phone and install 3.0 or did you just upgrade from a beta?
iphone tqarrif is 35 a month but with unlimited texts so total 45 a month. i restored to 3.0 in itunes. if i have unlimited sms and a mms is 4 sms does that mean i have unlimited sms?
unlimited mms*
I don’t know – you’d need to check with O2. I would assume the answer would be yes you do get unlimited MMS.
I went to your help site and downloaded the tethering hack… But I can’t alter my mms settings I can’t even find the option for cellular data network the only place I see APN on my phone is in the advance settings of the hack I got from you but it won’t let me update those… I don’t even have the camera in my SMS I am using a 3gs in the US please help me I want to use mms!!!
